Diversity and Inclusion Ambition Statement

The British Handball Association (BHA) is committed to ensuring our sport is welcoming, inclusive and truely representative of the diverse communities we serve, both locally and nationally.

Our strength lies in our unwavering commitment to collaboration across our handball organisations. Together with the Home Nations, we are dedicated to creating a sport free from discrimination, harassment, and prejudice.

Our commitment to progress

In line with the Code for Sports Governance, we are working to foster a diverse and inclusive environment throughout our organisation, from the Board to our participants. Our key ambitions include:

  • Diverse Leadership: We are committed to progressing towards achieving gender parity and greater diversity on the BHA Board. This includes increasing representation from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, disabled individuals, and those from an LGBTQ+ background.
  • Inclusive Practices: We will ensure all recruitment processes, including those for the Board and Senior Leaders, are inclusive and free from bias.
  • Open and Inclusive Culture: We are committed to working in an open and inclusive manner, promoting inclusive behaviours and values across the organisation and Home Nations.
  • Collaboration: We support the Home Nations in their Diversity and Inclusion efforts and will share good practice and resources across the entire handball community.

Defining our values

  • Equality means treating everyone with fairness and respect, recognising and responding to individual needs, and taking positive actions to address existing disadvantages and barriers to participation in handball.
  • Diversity means acknowledging and celebrating the differences between groups of people and between individuals.

This Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) is a working document, owned and regularly reviewed by the Board, and will be updated annually to reflect our progress and evolving targets.
